It was under the leadership of Prof. George Thomas, the famous Malayalam poet, the department of Malayalam started functioning in 1964, in 1968 Prof. T V John, in 1980 Sri. A. T. Senpillai, in 1981 Sri P N Vishnuradhan and in 1989 Sri. P A. Dominic joined the Department.

Seminars and workshops

We always take interest to provide our students with a wide range of cultural academic programmes.  Some of the programmes recently organized by the Department are as follows;

  • Kathakali Demonstration:-
    by Sri. Kalamandalam Ganeshan (Vesham), Sr. Pandalam Unnikrishnan (Pattu) and Sri.Kalamandalam Sreekumar ( Chenda) conducted on the 28th and the 29th of January 2009
  •  Kavya Kalari
    A programme of two modern poets of Malayalam- Sri Sebastian Kottappuram and Sri. Sreekumar Kariad presenting their own poems conducted on the 27th of February 2009
  • A lecture on classical concepts of drama by Sri.Aryad Bhargavan (world dramatic study centre) on the 30th of January 2009.
  • Chavittu Natakam- The Christian missionaries in Kerala adapted certain aspects of western opera and used it for the purpose of evangelizing people taking themes from the Bible and the early church history. Chavittu Natakam is a popular Christian art form prevalent in the coastal region of Kerala.
